Episode 1: Prolific D&D writer: Anthony Joyce-Rivera
Updated: Nov 29, 2021
An amazing talk with a wonderful individual.
Anthony and I go over his military career and how he got started long ago while deployed in the field. Getting started as a Specialist and working his way up to an active duty Major in the United States Army, he has to balance his everyday military life with being a creative in the TTRPG space!
How did you even get started writing custom adventures for TTRPGs?
“I have always enjoyed telling stories...I was looking to buy some Dwarven Forge...The concept was a self funding hobby...I haven't bought any Dwarven Forge yet!”
Starting out writing an adventure, The Heir of Orcus, for Adventurer's League, the ball just began to roll the moment he started noticing while working together with other creators that the military had prepared him for such a moment, as he was able to lead teams of creators using a productive system allowing everyone to bring their best stuff to the table. Now he and others are shooting out incredible material due to how well everyone seems to work together to create the work you see today.
People are still playing D&D today as they were back in the 70's
As we speak about his character in Return to EverQuest, Nurf'n Perf, Anthony reminisces about how crazy the world of EverQuest has changed his and many other people's lives over the 22 years since it's release.
Final Words
“In TTRPGs when we have the traditional adult, the DM is doing more of the arbitration of what is around them in the world, but when you play with a child, let the child arbitrate some of that. And when you do, they'll get more involved, because they are not being talked to, they are a PART of the story telling"
